Handyman Hiring – Finding a Good One

Let’s face it: when it comes to home repairs and remodeling, there are some people who just aren’t cut out for it. Though it can be tempting to save a lot of money and do small repairs yourself, you have to have the tools and a certain knack for the work to make it all worth it. Not everyone falls into that category.

For those who don’t, hiring a good handyman should be the primary skill they work to hone. That can be a difficult proposition in and of itself. You have to not only find someone fully competent, you need someone with a good work ethic. Someone who will show up on time and get the job done for the price he quotes. Here are some things to keep in mind when embarking on a search.

When most people go looking for a handyman, they turn to the phone book-whether the actual book or an online phone directory. This can be helpful, of course, but you have to know where to look. Decide exactly what you want and try looking under each of the categories.

For instance, if you are looking for cabinet repair, try looking under cabinetry and carpentry. If you don’t find what you’re looking for there, try looking in the classifieds. Sometimes people will advertise their services in that section of the newspaper or even online classifieds like Craigslist. This can be a good way to save money.

Of course, the best way to find a good handyman is through referral. If you’re having any other kind of work done on your home, try asking the contractors who they recommend for the specific job you want done. People in the industry will often have connections and they may be able to refer someone good.

Of course, you have to be somewhat wary of this method, as you don’t want to hire someone just because they made a good connection or because they happen to be friends with another contractor. Look to your friends for more honest recommendations.

While hiring an independent handyman can usually save you some money, you can often find one through larger services as well. A service company will usually guarantee their work and might prove more dependable. It also might be easier to find reviews and recommendations when it comes to a larger company.

Whether going independent or through a company, you need to know a few things about the person you’re hiring. Find out what you can about their experience, what kinds of licenses they have, and whether they are insured.
